| To optimize operations at Everett Yard in Everett, WA, BNSF commissioned TranSystems to develop a simulation model of a flat switching yard. The model would include all switching movements and the planning decisions needed to manage the yard, such as dynamically determining which tracks to assign to blocks, selection of inbound car cuts to switch into the yard, prioritization of tasks for yard crews, and assembly of departing trains. BNSF wanted a model that could explicitly track each car in terms of train block, length, tonnage and other attributes such that key performance statistics such as yard dwell time, yard inventory levels (by block) can be attained. |
